In pictorial representations of the coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven, Mary is often surrounded by angels playing music - singing and with accompanying wind, string or plucked instruments. Depictions of choirs of angels are also often found on altarpieces, its double doors often locked and only opened on high holidays. Then heaven and the heavenly choirs became visible to the congregation - heaven opened up. But how might this angelic music sound? What was the idea of it like in the Middle Ages? The Colusca ensemble's contribution to this year's festival theme deals with such questions - based on the assumption that the singing of the earthly celebrants and congregations mixes with the angelic choirs of the heavenly liturgy in the polyphony, while the polyphony in liturgical contexts initially belongs to the joyful genres and was reserved for positive moments. In addition to compositions by Guillaume Dufay and Walter Frye, examples from the repertoire that have been collected and handed down in the Engelberg Codex 314, in the Berliner Liederhandschrift 190 and in the Buxheimer Orgelbuch will also be heard. Because the joke tends to lean on the earnest, because mockery needs glamorization, and laughter can't do without a tear, the program includes - as a counterweight to the portion of grotesque satire, sarcasm and self-mockery - a number of medieval songs that praise the more serious world view of that era. Sheer beauty and deep devotion appear to be topics shared by pious worshippers as well as languishing troubadours.
